Gordonstoun School was founded in 1932 by Sir Alec Gordon, the 9th Earl of Kintore.

He wanted to create an environment that would challenge, and inspire his young charges, and after he saw a model for such an environment in Germany, he decided to create his own school based on this concept.
He also wanted to provide a classical education at a boarding school, which was very uncommon at the time.
