As generous philanthropists, they created the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. Their charitable interests range widely.

While living in Michigan and raising school-aged children, the couple visited the Potter’s House Christian School. They met parents who were working hard to provide a good education for their children in a safe environment despite difficult circumstances. At first, Betsy DeVos and her husband helped individual students. This led to the start of many education reform campaigns. After all these years, Betsy DeVos still works with the school to a large degree.

Realizing how desperate families were to provide a good education for their children, Betsy DeVos has used of variety of means to promote tax credit scholarships or vouchers. Their goal is to allow parents to choose where their children go to school instead simply having the option of going to a public school because of financial circumstances.

When asked what has been her biggest success, Betsy DeVos immediately points to Florida. The state has thousands of children attending schools that their parents decided on thanks laws related to educational choice. It was in Florida where she went on a tour of centers of education after becoming Secretary of Education. On one of those visits, she was accompanied by Pitbull.

In addition to being focused on educational choice, she is working to tear down the idea that students should go to a specific school based on the ZIP code of their home. She wants to promote freedom and incorporate technology in education. She feels that with the right framework of legislation, the freedom that is provided will benefit the education of all children.
